Thats sort of the point...when those gigs were on before ...the 'scene' was dying...there wasnt enough custom for everything...so people appreciated what was put on more....now people have loads and the younger ones dont always appreciate what a change that is........
Sorry Ants, I gotta disagree there. The scene was far from dying back then, it was just more 'underground' I think. Not as many were into it. The scene started to die when Big Ass started to put on a gig every week. It became meaningless. I know a lot of people agree with me on that point, even if they don't say so on here. Big Ass, although a success in some form, was the beginning of the death of the GY scene, and led to what we have now, a scene stagnant and depleted.
Also, I remember going to see Pinto, Gan and Kung Fu Joe (still got the flier somewhere) with Rob Birkett about 6 years ago. And I saw Kung Fu Joe's last gig at the White Hart. I remember 3rd Rate too Dunks ^_~
I was once almost crushed by crowd surfing in the Schnapps Barge...The ceiling wasn't very high... ^_^
After One Car Pile-Up's first show (Schnapps Barge again), me and Jonny went home and ordered kebabs. But having being stood right next to the PA speaker all night, we couldn't hear sod-all, and the kebab bloke drove off before we could answer the door. Bugger.

its a common problem , these guys are reffering to the rise of the west coast fat wreck chords sound in the usa, and how they were trying to diversify within themselves, to try and help the punk scene out of the hole it seemed to be heading into.....a lesson there i think
basically, however it used to be, however much we'd love it to go back to "how it was"....this would involve having the same experiences, the same emotions as we had inour fond memoies.
the problem with this is the fact that these can differ wildly from person to person.
we need to accept that this is a town with alot of ppl who have different musical background, and therefore different tastes. no one in this argument (i dont mean to say this has become an argument, lets say debate)...sorry debate..is wrong or right.
personally the happiest ive ever been at a gig was the levanta, injustice gigs, but i wouldnt wanna go and watch these bands now, i simply wouldnt enjoy it.

To clarify...I'm not sure what people mean when they talk about 'the scene'.For me it is to do with all forms of rock music and involves EVERYone who goes out...wether or not they are active and regardless of how many records their favourite bands sell....bear in mind I do see stuff like rock nights as an indication of how busy 'the scene' is...because businesses will only cater when there is a market to make money from....they dont care about scenes at all....they want to make money...the scene did die a few years ago...everything stopped due to lack of interest...the gigs still went on yes,and the reason they were bust was because they were the only thing available.If you look now...there is loads on..2 rock nights per week...at least one gig..often 2 per week and a businessman spending ?150,000 of his own money(no loans or anything...the guy isnt using credit options)on opening a members only club aimed exclusively at the rock crowd....music tastes are wayyyyy more varied than they ever were...partly because there is more and more styles out there..so stagnant?Depends on your oint of view and personal tastes...Depleted?No way...the rock scene is bigger than ever before in this town and it is the constant support of everyone that goes out that we have to thank for that.
Not to bash the pop punk genre in the slightest...but the very nature of the original topic is something that can put people off a certain style...if they are made to feel like they are looked at with disdain for getting into something later than everyone else...some people wont bother..because of the attitudes....hell welcome them in...because the more new fans it gets...the more it gets catered for in gigs and stuff.
Nostalgia can be a great thing for getting people to gigs...but too much of it can be a bad thing...because it then does become stagnant...I mean how many people would go see MU330 if they played here again?LOads.....but if there was loads of gigs of this nature..interest would wane..getting stuck in your ways is something that will happen to us all...but its best to hold it off for as long as possible...

Ahhhh, Fallout....and bless Spen. I used to fucking love those gigs. Loads of energy and loads of people having stacks of fun.
But, i noticed back then the older guys and gals had their divisions, as i feel a lot of people have nowadays. Its a shame because we are all basically supporting a similar vein of music, whether it be rock, punk, metal,whatever.
When i was younger i couldnt understand why they all argued about useless information, and now i see why. Even i am guilty of this by typing this message.
And, to add to the conversation regarding punk and its ever growing sub genres list; i can see why it is for the best. I think most people would be soooo bored of Fat Wreck Punk if some of the bands didnt branch out into new style, techniques rhythms and vocal types. I myself still listen to bands like Good Riddance, NOFX, NU4AN, etc, but now i also like to listen to more experimental, more dare i say 'soft' music. This also reflects in what i want to play as a musician as playing odd timings, weird chords and strange bass runs interests me and makes me want to play more.
I think my pointless post should now cease.
I'd love to see MU330 again... they rocked when we played with em.. that was a good gig... dave you say big ass wrecked the "scene" but personally I think fun with matches (smoke the profit an' that) had a lot to do with it before then.
well if anyone can get in touch...if there still together......we can put em on at Matrix.....
